We live in an ever-changing and uncontrollable reality. At times, it becomes difficult to make sense of all that is happening within and outside of our present selves. Emily Schubert creates objects to grapple with the quandaries that life presents: How do you cope with anxiety? How can you find moments of clarity in the onslaught of visual information that our media-saturated society circulates?
Schubert is an interdisciplinary artist whose practices—from the intricate collages that you see here to the performance of complex character costumes—inform each other to create a multi-faceted, artistic identity. Collage allows the artist to create intuitively and results in works of visual poetry. Schubert does not plan her collages ahead of construction. Instead, she draws inspiration and physical materials from images and words in published sources. She considers some of the resulting collages to be visual definitions, while others pose further questions. These questions may never be answered but the exploration always yields personal growth in a subject that was previously perplexing and or entirely unknown.
